Born in Walthamstow, London, and raised in Slough, Bell moved to North Yorkshire with his family in 1968, where he trained as an artist at the Teesside College of Art. He graduated in film-making and art at the University of Leeds in 1974 and trained as an art teacher at St Luke’s College, Exeter in 1975. He taught art for one year in Birmingham before becoming a freelance cartoonist in 1977. He is married with four grown up children, and lives in Brighton.
In a prolific career spanning four decades Steve Bell has lampooned just about every prominent figure in the world of politics. His work has been published and exhibited all over the world and he has won numerous awards.
He has written and drawn the daily ‘If…’ strip in The Guardian newspaper for over thirty years, and since 1990, has produced four big ones a week on the leader and comment pages, everything now in full, lustrous watercolour.
See and hear how he does it in a vividly illustrated political history of the late twentieth and early twenty first century with accompanying voice and sound effects.
